Austral Eclectus Aviary
Bean Mix

1 bag 15 bean soup mix (seasoning packet removed)
 2cups brown rice
Mix and add to a large pot of cold water. Bring to a boil and simmer 30 minutes. Rinse with cold water.
2 lg (2lb) bags frozen mixed vegetables
1 small bag frozen chopped broccoli - larger and they won't eat it.
1/2 cup each shelled sunflower seeds and brown sesame seeds.
I chop 2 sweet potatoes, or other vitamin A rich vegetable (carrot, squashes) finely in the food processor, and microwave in a large bowl for 10 minutes to blanch, and stir this into my bean mix before adding the frozen vegetables.

This food can spoil if left too long in the cage. If you work a long day, you can feed it for breakfast and remove it, and feed it again at dinner. Do not leave it longer than 4 hours in the cage, especially in Summer, as it will get rancid. Older birds do fine with fruits and vegetables and a dry food (no pellets!) like Goldenfeast Madagascar Delight if they must be left for a long time, but the bean mix is important for newly weaned babies, whose tastes run towards warm, mushy foods. Older birds should have it at least once a day. I feed it twice.

Birdie Bread

Preheat oven to 375 degrees.
Add 1T of baking powder and 2c corn meal to food processor and blend
Throw in 2 eggs, shell and all
From here you can get creative: greens, sweet potato, canned or fresh pumpkin, etc. The idea is to make a moist batter you can bake.
Oil a black iron skillet or other teflon-free baking dish and add the batter. Bake 30 40 min or until a toothpick inserted in the center comes out clean. Cool and cut into sections and freeze what you don't intend to use right away.

Problems With Enriched Foods for Eclectus

From Laurella Desborough:

Nutriberries are loved by parrots, including most eclectus parrots.
But, Nutriberries are one of the items that often cause toe tapping and wing flipping.
This is because they have plenty of vitamins and minerals added, just as Avi-Cakes, etc. That means that they also include man made Vitamin A...which is not easily flushed by eclectus parrots and builds up in the liver, eventually reaching a tipping point when the bird begins to experience muscle spasms because the vitamin A is interfering with the proper uptake of calcium...thus the muscle spasms.

We do warn about any of the commercial treats for birds that contain man made vitamins.
It is always a good idea to read the contents of any foods that you plan to give your birds if those are processed foods. Natural foods are best for these birds.
